Land-based learning is an approach to education that emphasizes the deep connection between Indigenous peoples and their ancestral lands. It uses the land as a foundation for learning, fostering cultural understanding, environmental awareness, and personal growth.

Painted Horse Ranch provides land based learning activities of the Anishinaabe people. All activities include Anishinaabe grass roots teachings and protocol. The activities provided are as follows:

  • Tipi Building

  • Archery

  • Intro to Hunting

  • Trapping

  • Hide Tanning

  • Drum Making

  • Food Preservation

Here's what makes Indigenous land-based learning special:

  • Immersive Learning: Step outside the classroom and onto the land, engaging all your senses as you learn directly from the environment.

  • Cultural Wisdom: Learn from Indigenous Elders and knowledge keepers, gaining insights into traditional ecological knowledge, stories, and practices passed down through generations.

  • Holistic Development: Nurture your physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual well-being through hands-on activities and teachings that connect you to the land and your inner self.

  • Environmental Stewardship: Develop a deep appreciation for the interconnectedness of all living things and learn how to become a responsible caretaker of the Earth.

  • Decolonize Your Mind: Challenge conventional perspectives and embrace Indigenous ways of knowing, fostering a more inclusive and equitable understanding of the world.
